Dr. Theodore S. Grabow is the former director of the Johns Hopkins Pain Treatment Center and the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins University. He holds two certificates from the American Board of Medical Specialties. He is Board Certified both in Anesthesiology and in Pain Medicine. Dr. Grabow is trained in both interventional and multidisciplinary techniques for the management of chronic pain. His academic accomplishments include several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and held an adjunct appointment at the University for several years after his departure.
Dr. Grabow was one of the first physicians in the Baltimore community to perform both interventional and comprehensive multidisciplinary pain management services including radiofrequency ablation for cervical and lumbar facet joint pain. Dr. Grabow’s practice is recognized in the community as a leading group of University trained and Board Certified pain management physicians. His practice is one of the busiest pain management practices in the Baltimore area. He alone performs over 3,000 injections yearly including facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, nerve root blocks, major joint injections, and epidural steroid injections.
Dr. Grabow completed his undergraduate education at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota where he received his Bachelors of Arts in Biology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York School of Medicine in Buffalo, New York. He did his medical Internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and completed his Residency training in Anesthesiology at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in Chicago, Illinois. He has been involved in pain research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as well as the University of Chicago. His research and clinical interests in pain management brought him to Baltimore, Maryland in 1998 for additional fellowship training and research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has lived in Roland Park with his wife ever since coming to Baltimore in 1998. While living in Roland Park, he served as President of the Roland Park Condominium Board of Directors for many years.
Dr. Grabow is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He also is a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. He holds a Clinical Staff appointment at University of Maryland University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center and Ruxton SurgiCenter. He has been a recipient of the Recognition Service Award from St. Clair Medical Outreach at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. In addition, he has been recognized by the Consumer’s Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Anesthesiologists and has been featured in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Dr. Grabow has been a reviewer for several peer-reviewed scientific medical journals. He has co-authored several book chapters as well as scientific journal articles available through Medline. He has lectured at national and community organized academic and University-sponsored conferences on pain management including the Johns Hopkins Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia Update. Dr. Grabow presented at the 6th Annual Maryland Patient Safety Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
In his spare time, Dr. Grabow enjoys reading novels, listening to music, and following sports. He and his wife enjoy contemporary art and frequent the local Performing Arts scene. Dr. Grabow is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys fresh water fishing and hunting. He recently returned from northeastern Saskatchewan, Canada fishing for large northern pike. He also enjoys fishing and crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Grabow is a fan of the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings football teams as well as the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins baseball teams. He follows D.C. United Soccer Club but also several European soccer clubs. He also enjoys the Minnesota Wild hockey team and follows both professional and college hockey.
